The sun warmed our faces and the wind stayed at our backs.

I'd like to think we all have a touch of Irish, even if in spirit. The hardworking, layman's witty philosophy and love of the green applies to us artists, too. A dozen hearty souls joined me on March 17 at City Park to brave the elements and sketch outdoors. It was ARTspot's first "All-Are-Welcome" Sketching Edmonds event.

We found plenty of green, lit by spring sunshine and animated by a cool breeze. Many expressed appreciation for an excuse to be outside in the company of other artists.

My eye was intrigued by the braided bark of this large fir tree. The roots twisted to secure this hearty specimen into the moss-covered soil.

I love the symbolism of trees. They connect the earth to the sky and illustrate so clearly the cycle of the seasons. Capturing a tree's uniqueness can be as tricky as a portrait. We are all the better for trying.

Join me for our next ARTspot Sketching Event on April 22 to celebrate Earth Day. —Tracy Felix
