Instructor Bio

Dave Roholt
Born in Salt Lake City, UT
Lives & works in Lakewood, WA

I have been teaching art for about 20 years and now work as a Professor of Art at Pierce College, located in Lakewood Washington. I am ever so grateful to live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest thanks to the love of my life Jenny Roholt, who is simply an amazing artist and art educator. My background is in painting, drawing, and printmaking. I started this path proudly at a community college and earned an Associate of Arts from Salt Lake Community College. Then on to a BFA in drawing and painting from Utah State University, and a wrapped it all up with a MFA in painting from Colorado State University. Aside from art of course-I enjoy hiking, cross-country skiing, and I am an avid fly fisherman and fly tyer. I love all things Japanese and lived in the Northern Japan for two years as a missionary.

Supply List

Note: open to a variety of materials and please come with what you like. The following list below is just suggestions of materials that I enjoy and maybe use for demonstrations.

Be sure to ask for your 10% discount at ARTspot from registration to workshop end-of-day.

  • 1 Black and 1 Gray Marker- suggestions include Tombow, Posca, Sharpie or Kurateki brush pens. Any type of marker can be used for notan construction.

  • 1 Small multi-media or hot or cold press watercolor sketchbook. Landscape format is a popular choice but square matrix is always a fun alternative. Size approximately 5.5 x 8.5

  • 1 Graphite mechanical pencil- .5 .7 or .9. I am also a huge fan of Koh-I-Noor mechanical pencil short clutch diameter 2 mm when using coldpress watercolor paper, but again just about any brand will work for this workshop.

  • 1 Kneaded eraser

  • 1 Black, brown, or blue pen- For example a Lamy Safari fountain pen is an urban sketching favorite. I often bounce between waterproof and water soluble inks. Either is fine for this workshop. Lots of good cheaper alternatives include Uniball Vision, Uniball Air, or Micron. ARTspot has Varsity fountain pens and Zebra ball points.

  • (Optional) watercolor palette. Any type from expensive to cheap is fine, for the record I prefer the Whiskey Painters Naked Noir, loaded with Daniel Smith half and full pan paints. Again, please use what you like and no materials are wrong in this case. Check out ARTspot Koi, Windsor Newton and Art Tookkit prefilled travel palettes!

  • (Optional) watercolor brushes. All you need would be a few small to midsized round or flat brushes. I am a huge fan of Rosemary & Company Red-dot series brushes. DaVinci, Raphael, and Princeton, are also brands to consider. ARTspot carries Princeton (petites are cool) and Silver Brush Black Velvet Travel Brushes.

  • (Optional) water color cup. I like the expandable silicon types such as the Faber-Castell Clic & Go Water Cup

  • (Optional) other materials welcome- such as markers, color pencils, or gouache etc. Tip for this half-day work shop - try not to over pack and feel free to keep it simple as you like. When all is said and done be sure whatever you take can fit in a small bag or back pack so we can stay flexible and on selecting locations. Limitations can be a great catalyst for unlocking new approaches in your art.

Other Optional Suggested Items

  • Sun glasses & Sun Screen

  • Light weight camping chair

  • Rain Jacket

  • Binder Clips-I find they always are handy when in plein air situations

  • Water bottle
