I have been a potter and an art educator for over 40 years. My current artwork, which I call “potter’s circles,” is an outgrowth of a teaching experience I had with a class of special needs students. Several of the children had limited fine motor control but were able to create circular line designs and experiment with color mixing of liquid media on a spinning potters wheel. My students found success, and I saw unique surface qualities and linear design in the circular shapes they created. In my own work, I have expanded on the spinning technique by experimenting with scale and various wet/dry media. I use the precisely cut circles to assemble compositions that show the interplay between repetition and variation.
